Seafood Industry Innovator Makes Splash in Thailand

In September 2017, Cozy Harbor Seafood, located in Portland, Maine, in the 1st Congressional District, attended the USA Seafood Trade Mission to Southeast Asia where they participated in seafood market tours and met with buyers from Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia and Malaysia. As a result of their meetings, a buyer from Thailand has placed a first-time order of nearly 8,800 pounds (4,000 kgs) of various frozen lobster products. Not only was this a new buyer for Cozy Harbor, but a first time sale to the Thailand market.

According to Tom Keegan, who represents international and domestic sales for Cozy Harbor, “In today’s ever-changing trade climate, it’s very important for Cozy Harbor Seafood to keep expanding our markets and our products to remain competitive globally.” Cozy Harbor takes quality and innovation seriously having been a 2017 Grand Prize Winner and a 2018 Finalist for the Seafood Global Excellence Awards for their flash frozen lobster and their "Lobster Tonight" Lobster Slider Chef's Kit, respectively.  These creative product developments allow more purchases from U.S. lobster harvesters and more avenues for global consumers to taste U.S. lobster.

Food Export uses funding from the Market Access Program (MAP) to help America’s small businesses increase their exports of food and agricultural products. As these exports increase, these small businesses are creating jobs and improving the strength and stability of our agricultural economy.

The USA Seafood Trade Mission was a first-time event promoting U.S. seafood suppliers from coast to coast through the participation of six project partners:  the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute (ASMI); Food Export – Midwest; Food Export – Northeast; the Intertribal Agriculture Council; the Southern United States Trade Association (SUSTA); and the Western United States Trade Association (WUSATA)

Food Export-Midwest and Food Export-Northeast are non-profit organizations that work in collaboration with their member state departments of agriculture and the USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service. They offer a wide range of programs and services that help boost America’s agricultural exports.
