Vermont Gourmet Pizza Company Breaks Into Canadian Market

In 2018, Against the Grain Gourmet, located in Brattleboro, Vermont, utilized Food Export - Northeast’s Market Access Program (MAP) funded Branded Program to expand their sales into the Canadian market.

Using their allocated funding to exhibit at multiple trade shows in Canada and make label modifications helped the Vermont Supplier expand their product brand in Calgary and Vancouver. Through using the Branded Program, Against the Grain Gourmet made $40,000 in actual sales, and project to generate $80,000 more in sales over the next twelve months. They were also able to make 20 new foreign contacts and 1 new agent relationship.

Against the Grain Gourmet has utilized other Food Export programs, such as recorded webinars, Trade Leads and the Online Product Catalog in both 2018 and 2019, and they attended the Northeast Buyers Mission in Boston in 2018. Against the Grain Gourmet is a producer of gluten free, gourmet ready meals in the retail market segment. In 2019 they launched a 10-inch pizza to align with the Canadian natural food market.

Owned by a celiac family, the company is committed to baking gluten free products using only the natural properties of real foods. They combine innovative, artisan baking techniques with naturally gluten free ingredients to stabilize, bind, and leaven their breads. They source locally wherever possible, and never use preservatives or other chemical additives.
AgainsttheGrainFood Export uses funding from the Market Access Program (MAP) to help America’s small businesses increase their exports of food and agricultural products. As these exports increase, these small businesses are creating jobs and improving the strength and stability of our agricultural economy. Food Export-Midwest and Food Export-Northeast are non-profit organizations that work in collaboration with their member state departments of agriculture and the USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service. They offer a wide range of programs and services that help boost America’s agricultural exports.
