First-Time Export Sale of Missouri Pecans to Taiwan

by Food Export | Feb 04, 2020
In September of 2019, Missouri Northern Pecan Growers, LLC, headquartered in rural Nevada, Missouri, attended Food Export - Northeast’s Natural Products Buyers Mission in Baltimore where they had a successful meeting with a buyer from Taiwan during their scheduled one-on-one private meetings at the event.

The Missouri supplier was able to share their success reporting that they exported an initial order of one pallet of bulk organic pecan halves to Taiwan which was shipped mid-January.

Missouri Northern Pecan Growers’ General Manager, Joe Wilson, and Food Safety Manager, Cheshta Sehgal, have been working with the Taiwan distributor on the details and paperwork needed to get the pecans to Taiwan.  “With organic products, especially to Taiwan, there is an additional layer of paperwork and certifications needed to gain entry into the market,” says Ms. Sehgal.  “Many times, there is a lot of back and forth with the buyer and the process can be quite lengthy.  In this instance, the buyer was upfront about the needed certifications and requirements and we were able to comply quickly.  This led to a quick turnaround and a quick sale within just a couple of months of meeting the buyer,” she continued.  Mr. Wilson added, “It was so important for us to participate in Food Export’s Buyers Mission.  We are a small, farmer-owned company and participating in Food Export’s Buyers Missions is one of the primary marketing tools we use to find international buyers.  If it wasn’t for Food Export, this sale would not have happened.”

Missouri Northern Pecan Growers, LLC is a small business owned by farmers Joe Wilson and Wayne Harth.  They are the world’s foremost supplier of the American Native pecan, and the only certified organic native pecan that features the title of American Native pecans.  Missouri Northern Pecan Growers’ pecans are wild, certified organic, and are “sweeter by nature,” growing naturally in the rich river bottom soils of Missouri, in the northernmost region of pecan production. Although slightly smaller than southern pecans, the unique sweetness of their pecans is a result of the higher oil content associated with northern pecans. This results in their extremely flavorful American Native nutmeats preferred by many.

Missouri Northern Pecan Growers, LLC has actively utilized Food Export programs since 2003, participating in a wide variety of programs and services, including the Branded Program, webinars, Buyers Missions, and the Online Product Catalog.

Food Export uses funding from the Market Access Program (MAP) to help America’s small businesses increase their exports of food and agricultural products. As these exports increase, these small businesses are creating jobs and improving the strength and stability of our agricultural economy. Food Export-Midwest and Food Export-Northeast are non-profit organizations that work in collaboration with their member state departments of agriculture and the USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service. They offer a wide range of programs and services that help boost America’s agricultural exports.
